the rowan tree, Irish caorthann, Early Irish caerthann, Welsh cerddin, Breton kerzin, *cairo-tann, from caor, berry, and *tann, tree, Breton tann, oak, Cornish glas-tannen. The connection with Old High German tanna, fir, oak, Middle High German tan, wood, German tanne, fir, English tan, tanner (Greek $$Gqámnos, bush?) is doubtful; it would necessitate the idea of borrowing, or that the Celtic word was dann.
